      Journaling:
the “Not a Big Fan of Nature” Log Book
      August 31, 2010

There are a few things about me you should know...
      1. I despise bugs - all of them - all shapes and sizes - yes - even lady bugs - ICK
      2. I tend to be a little over dramatic when it comes to bugs
      3. I like to make up my own words for just about everything... i.e. Caterpoozle = Caterpillar

So it’s no surprise that when I saw this little beauty crawling on our deck I... well... FREAKED OUT.
Wouldn’t you? For crying out loud the thing had pointy black spikes all over it and 3 (yes three) sets
of horns! I was so grateful for the glass that separated me from this GINORMOUSLY terrifying,
blood-thirsty man-eater. For all I know I could have been consumed in the blink of an eye. OK so
maybe it was only 4 inches long... STILL - look at this thing! After breathing into a paper bag for a
few minutes I decided that I should take a picture of this prehistoric looking spectacle. The darn
glass was not cooperating with me though and every picture came out icky. So I put on my big girl
pants (Dave’s hat, my gloves, & a pair of boots) and decided to go outside.... where it was... just
waiting to attack. UGH. I agonized over opening that door for about 10 minutes and finally decided
that I would just do it. Of course my hubby and brother were making fun of me the whole time...
Thank goodness for my zoom lens & macro settings because I was able to stay a good 2 feet
away from this thing but still managed a few good shots. After my daring little escapade with the
dragonzilla I figured we should look it up on the internet to see what it really was... Turns out, it
is called a “Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar” and comes from the Royal Walnut Moth. They just
LOOOOOVE to dine on Walnut leaves and lucky for me we just happen to have a HUMONGOUS old
Walnut tree that we built our entire deck around. Great! ... can’t wait to meet his friends.
      OYE VEY!!

Thanks Valoree for your sweet comment on my layout HERE- I was putting my layout together at the last minute last night and I couldn't get my brain to work - LOL! As soon as I woke up this morning I knew what I did wrong but last night I was just too tired to figure it out with my little Bre talking in my ear and wanting me to finish up! I really should rework the layout instead of trying to cover things with flowers -

WOW - that's a monster of a thing!! I find bugs facinating! My husband on the other hand can't stand them!! I loved reading every word of your journaling and the whole page is so well done - great job on the page and great job on capturing those pics despite your feelings for all things bug related! LOL!!
