Oh, that sounds like a fun tradition! My mom often made a bunny cake with two circles, the one cut into three pieces for the ears and a bow tie.

There are all great ideas!! I used to be so scared of making cakes, so for the first three years of my son's life I didn't make them. But I did make the last two, and was pretty happy with them. He loved them, and that's what matters most :)!

Reminds me of the days before the kids got older! I have a wonderful "Children's Birthday Cake book" from the Australian Women's Weekly Home Library that is full of these ideas. Also how to make the numbers from tube (for a circle) and long loaf pans. Had fun using their 8 and making a racecar course out of it for son. Another year a pink elephant out of two round cake pans for daughter. Now they sometimes decorate their own cakes with their own designs =D

oh, how great.

I used to get one looking like a railroad engine (really easily made: sponge cake spread with apricot jelly, rolled up, cut into two pieces (1/3 & 2/3), the small piece in an errected position put on top of the bigger piece and decorated with a chocolate coating and other bits and pieces). oh, how I miss that. we used to get it for EVERY birthday until teenage times. ...

you know what, I'm gonna make that for paulina this year. reliving an all-time-favourite tradition! thanks for reminding me, rosy!!
